Biographical Info I moved to
Arcata 15 years ago. I was a single
parent with three sons, aged 14, 12 and 8 years old.
We knew no one and I didnt have a job.
Looking back at it, it must have been a lot harder on them than me, but we
were together and that made a big difference. I am self-employed as a landscaper. When I cut my neighbors lawns at age 10, I
yearned for the day when I had a real job with a check at the end of the week and a social
security card. I would never have guessed in
1972, as I graduated from Cal State LA with a degree in engineering, that I would be
mowing lawns 30 years later. Along the way
Ive been a teacher (I taught Spanish at Pacific Union School, 1993-2000), a
substitute teacher, a teachers aide, a millwright (Masonite Corp. 1979-1989), a
Project Manager and Control Center Specialist (Robertshaw Controls Company (between
1973-1979), sales engineer and director of marketing
for small optical and electro-optical companies, a restaurant manager, a
deli-worker, a factory worker, a laborer, and I served three years in the Army. Ive
been involved with the City and politics as a member of the Arcata City
Council, elected in 2004; as a member of the Humboldt County Association of
Governments (HCOG); as a member for seven years of the
Transportation Safety Committee; as election precinct inspector for eight years at City
Hall; as a volunteer and fund raiser for the Paul Gallegos no recall campaign; a member of
the California Teachers Association (1993-2000); a campaign worker for Jennifer Hannan in 1996; an activist opposing the proposed Janes Creek West City / Simpson 900
home Arcata Bottoms development; a member of the City of Ukiah Solar Access Committee;
P.T.A. president of the Redwood Valley-Calpella PTA; a volunteer/activist in the Dan
Hamburg supervisor no recall in Ukiah; and a member/shop steward/business agent for the
Teamsters Local 624 from 1979 to 1989. Now, since
my sons are grown and have left home, I have the time to devote to the
County as your Supervisor. I look forward to working
with every other Supervisor. I have
learned how to work with a group and come to decisions through my time with
HCOG, with the Arcata City Council, with Transportation Safety Committee, and
from my past experience as a teacher and union leader. As a union leader I have negotiated contracts,
filed grievances and gone through the arbitration process.

IN
SUPPORT OF CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM, I AM NOT TAKING ANY MONEY.
I am not soliciting or taking any endorsements, and will have no
advertising or lawn signs.
I believe our Third District needs a strong supervisor who will support his constituents. As soon as John Woolley announced that he would not be running for re-election after serving three terms as Supervisor, I went in the next day to get my papers to file for this election.
There was no waffling or indecision or "I wonder who else is running" hesitation for me. I came out first in this campaign to purposely raise the bar for all the candidates -- whoever they would be -- and to encourage grass-roots campaigning. I want to reject the format that has gotten us to this point, where we have so little choice in most of our county, state, and federal elections. To me, this Supervisor's race is not about doing whatever is needed to do to win. Its about being and remaining independent so voters get ME, not those who endorsed me or supported me financially.
In the 2006 Fourth District Supervisor race two years ago, over $220,000 was raised by those two candidates, for a total in the November election of about 7400 votes. This is close to $30 per vote spent for advertising, polls, fund-raisers, management, and all the other costs that are associated with a "traditional" campaign. In that race, the two candidates had distinctly different views for the future of Humboldt County. I propose that you, the voters, can tell the difference between the candidates without those lawn signs and television ads.
What I am saying is that there is something wrong when an election is based on who can raise more money, instead of what the candidate stands for.
Between now and June 3rd, I'll be out at every chance I have to meet with you. There will be debates between myself and the other candidates. There will be articles in the newspapers. You can read my credentials and viewpoints on this website. And you can call me on the phone. You can find out a lot more about me by meeting with me or talking with me than you ever would from an ad.
With
me, what you see is what you get.
Thank You for your support.
Please
call or write if you want to talk with me.
